Free Kayaking & Scuba Diving in Yeosu!
During the summer vacation, six members of our old team decided to go on a city tour to Yeosu-Expo! Initially, our plan was to visit an unfamiliar island called Hongdo (홍도), one of the most beautiful places in Korea. The island is accessible from Mokpo Port (목포해안), but the weather conditions for the route are always unpredictable. It is far away from the mainland, making it a bit challenging to reach. However, this remoteness adds to its charm—a true hidden gem. If you ever plan to visit, be prepared for surprises, both in terms of weather and breathtaking views. The island is known for its dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and unique flora and fauna. Nature lovers will find Hongdo a paradise worth the effort.
Unfortunately, just a day before our departure, we were informed that ferry services to the island were canceled due to bad weather. Everyone was heartbroken. One of our friends, who had been planning this trip for months, had warned us to be cautious with our planning. Perhaps it just wasn’t meant to be. With no other option, we decided to switch our plans to a Yeosu-Expo city tour at the last minute. Although the shift was abrupt, it turned out to be an unforgettable experience filled with surprises.
How was our planning
From the beginning, the Yeosu tour felt like a string of misadventures. Even upon reaching the city, we faced several small inconveniences. However, everything changed when we stumbled upon free kayaking and scuba diving. To our surprise, the activities were being offered as part of a promotional event! This turned our frustration into excitement. If you want to enjoy these activities for free, it’s worth checking their current promotional offers ahead of time.
Later, we learned that the free offer might not last long, so don’t miss the chance if it’s available. That said, not everything free is always great. For instance, the scuba diving experience wasn’t as thrilling as we expected. Without coral reefs, the underwater views were lackluster, and honestly, sitting by the water would have been a better choice. Still, everyone but Yaseen Bhai and I decided to give it a try in the murky waters. After the scuba diving, we tried kayaking, which was undoubtedly the highlight of the trip!
Kayaking was an absolute blast. The fun and excitement of paddling in the sea made it more enjoyable than any paid experience. Though I have had a fear of water since childhood, I pushed myself to try it. With the support of my friend, a confident swimmer, I felt safe. If you’re scared of water like me, don’t worry—the staff ensures safety with life jackets and proper instructions. The sense of accomplishment you feel after overcoming such fears is unmatched.
We had to register our names, provide an ID, and fill out a form to rent the kayaks. After that, we were given a short briefing on safety protocols and paddling techniques. With all our gear—life jackets, paddles, and kayaks—we set off into the sea. The water splashing, the view of the horizon, and the camaraderie among us made it an unforgettable experience. Though we got carried away with excitement (to the point that authorities had to warn us), it added to the adventure! I’d say this was one of the most thrilling moments of the trip, leaving us with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
